Good news come from the German front of automotives: BMW is planing on doing motorcycles with a lower capacity. Stephan Schaller, the company’s head of motorcycles confirmed to MCN that the bikes of under-500 cc which are built in collaboration with the Indian company TVS will see the light next year.

As one might expect, the company is already developing a prototype bike and according to MCN the new series of bikes will have 300cc engines. I don’t know if you realize, but this places BMW at the top of the greatest sector of small capacity bikes.

For starteres, the bikes will be sold in India and the Western markets. And experience makes us believe that BMW will also come up with a minimum of three versions: sports-styled bike, a roadster and a GS-alike. This is a great change taking into account that the German company was normally concentrated on luxury bikes and not smaller ones.

Stephan Schaller also announced that the cooperation with this indian company is on the right track and that the compatibility between BMW and TVS is surely one which will bring a massive success.

“We have a highly expert and experienced partner in the TVS Motor Company. This means that in future we will be able to offer vehicles in smaller capacity classes in addition to the BMW Motorrad core segments. Various types of motorcycle are conceivable. They will meet the expectations of a BMW motorcycle in terms of riding fun as well as setting a new benchmark when it comes to stability, agility and performance figures. I regard this long-term cooperation as an important step along the road to profitable, sustainable growth.

We will keep the original timing, but maybe we have to put a little bit more resource into this to keep with the schedule. In one year’s time I think we can start talking about the new bikes. The design and engineering are done by BMW in Munich and then TVS is doing much of the work to get these bikes ready for production” says Schaller.
